Fabric & Paint

Too Fun! My class this last Thursday with Bobbie Bergquist was every thing I had hoped for.  Bobbie walked us through quick and easy techniques for creating unique fabric.  She provided guidance on technique and encouraged creativity.  The class was an offering at The Sewing, Quilting and Stitches Expo at the Sharonville Convention Center in Sharonville, OH.

Bobbie started us off with a pallet of shaving cream with drops of ink.

ShavingCreamII

ShavingCream

The ink is dispersed into the shaving cream using a toothpick or coffee stir stick.  Once the artist is happy with the dispersion a piece of fabric is placed on top. The fabric is lightly smoothed and lifted.  Excess shaving cream is removed and the surprise fabric is revealed.

The ink dries quickly and requires heat setting.

The shaving cream removed from the fabric and left behind on the palette was then used for stenciling and silk screen.  More paint or shaving cream could be added to manipulate the colors and intensity of the pallet.

Bobbie has a variety of stencils and silk screen items for testing and playing.

Tone on Tone fabric was used for the playing and created wonderful and interesting life on the fabric.

Here are more creations from the class.

Pens can be used to enhance the stenciling and silk screen.

How fun is this.

SS5

The three hour class went by quickly and was a lot of fun!

The supplies used were Tsukineko inks and pens, a pallet board,  squeegee, fabrics squares and lots of creativity and imagination.  If you have a chance to take a class with Bobbie jump on it.  You won’t be disappointed.

Here’s a link to her web site, Quilters Treasure,  if you’d like to check out her work and show schedule: http://www.quilterstreasure.com/index.html

A special thanks to Bobbie and all of the students for allowing me to take pictures.

Quilting, Stitches & Crafts Expo

This week I’ve been busy with non sewing projects.  My other love is gardening.  Since I’ve been in the Cincy area I’ve not been as dedicated to this passion as I have in the past.  I am active with the local Master Gardener group in Warren Co.  We (I use this term very loosely to include myself) will be hosting the state MG conference.  I’m creating a stepping stone for the counties attending.  That’s where my time has been spent this week.

Here’s the clay.  From here I create a form from polyurethane. Once the form is complete, the concrete stones will be poured.  I need 20 by the first of Oct. and they take 24 hours to cure.  I better stay on top of this task.

Ohio MG Clay

I do have plans for some sewing items this week.  I will be at Luke’s Seminar in Loveland on Tuesday evening.  I’ll be showing a few thing and talking about software.

On Thursday evening I’ll be attending Quilting, Stitches & Crafts Expo in Sharonville.  I’m going to take a class titled ‘Silk Screening On Fabric or Clothing’. Bobbie Bergquist will be teaching the class. I love the idea of creating unique fabrics. It should be a lot of fun.  I should take my camera along and take pictures (this is a key thing to remember).  I could use the pictures to remember and to share with all of you.

Let me know if you’re planning on being in the class or will be at the show. I’d love to touch base if my schedule will allow.

That’s all I have this week.  I hope all of you are enjoying your summer.

4D Help

Help! This is a plea we hear often.  Whether there is a need to get through a particular task or working through learning something new.  I’ve heard it often with the 4D Embroidery software.  I like helping and enjoy the challenge to explain something or figure out a function.  I often find the answers to the question by reading through the help within 4D.  This week I’d like to share the features and functions of Help within the 4D software.

The Help function can be accessed from any of the 4D modules  The Help content is different based upon the module but the function of the Help features are the same.  You can access help by clicking on the Help icon or pressing F1.

This That & a Little Inspiration

Oh my! August.  Where is the time going? It doesn’t seem like I’m getting much done. Each week I look back and ask myself “What did you get done this week? What can you share?” Some weeks I have to dig pretty deep and other weeks the answer is easy.  This week I’ve been busy with a few things.
I’ve been working on some drawings and learning to use Paint.net.  This is a more sophisticated tool than the paint software that comes with many Windows operating systems.  It has quite a bit more functionality.  If fact I’m almost having fun with it.  I found the standard paint product very limiting and frustrating but I didn’t want a high powered tool like Adobe Illustrator.  I also didn’t want to spend too much money.  My objective was to find a tool that was at a not too complicated and inexpensive.  So last weekend I did a little homework and came up with Paint.net.

Pic1

I’m still learning the tool and found the Rotate / Zoom function a whole lot of fun.  I’m hopeful this program will open up a new dimension in my sewing and embroidery.  Here is the link if you want to know more about the tool: http://www.paint.net/
Oh and it’s Free!
I’ve been doing a little smocking.  I have an Amanda Jane and am learning the nuances of creating an evenly pleated piece of fabric.  You would think it would be straight forward – put the fabric in, crank the handle and walla! Not true.  It does take a little bit of practice and care for the fabric being pleated.  If any of you have some tips, please share them.  I’m still getting some uneven folds in my pleating.

I also stitched out one of the Needlework Hand look designs introduced at Convention.  The design recommended cotton thread in a 30 or 40 weight.  My stash didn’t have the right colors and content.  So instead I went to my embroidery floss stash.  I’ve often wondered what I would do with the floss.  I knew I wouldn’t be doing any thing involving hand embroidery.  (Why would I?) OK back to the stash.  I went through the stash and found a number of colors that matched the knitted pattern in the sweater.  I do need to give credit to my GF (good friend) Brenda.  She has an eye for color and makes the matching process fun.  I pulled the floss strands apart and wound them onto empty spools. (I have a hard time throwing them away.) I was only missing 2 colors.  I picked those up at JoAnn’s.  One color was a thread spool and the other another skein of embroidery floss.  The design stitched out nicely.  I did use a larger size needle because the floss was quite heavy even with only 1 strand.  I slowed the machine and kept a good eye on the stitch out.  It did stop often since the longest strand when using the floss was 9 yards.  I had planned to use the sweater for a felted bag. When I do get around to that project the bag will have more interest.

I’ve also been playing with the Texture Hoop designs.  Here is design 221314 from 213 Texture Hoop Ribbons & Flowers. I have it on point intentionally.  I plan to share that project info in the not too distant future.

TextureHoopstitch
Here is a design I created using components of 221314. It’s still only virtual.  I’ll need to look for a place to incorporate the design.  Oh, I just love the 4D software!

221318extract1
That’s all that I have for the week.  I do have more items in the wings. I have the new 4D ExpressMonogram Wizard software.  I haven’t broken the seal yet.  I have a couple things that need to be completed before I start to play.

LinSews Post # 94

I was talking about blogging with my DH/BF (dear husband/best friend) the other day.  He’s an avid blogger and keeps several sites active with information and photography.  He’s a huge source of information for me and is my go to guy for any trouble or tweaking I want to do on my site.  As we were talking he mentioned he was about to publish his umpteenth post.  I thought wow, that’s a lot.  I wonder how many I have.

I’ve been blogging regularly since the beginning of 2008 so I knew it wasn’t quite two years.  I occasionally will post more than once a week but for the most part it is weekly.  Well, as you can tell this week the number is 94.  That’s just a few posts away from 100.  I think I’ll need to do something special for the 100th post.  Perhaps a review of the good the bad and well . . .the experience.

For this week I thought I’d ask what you like about the site. What do you like, what don’t you like.  Are there particular posting that were particularly enlightening? Let me know.

The one thing I do want to share with you this week is one of the tools on my web site.  Just to the right there is a search box.   The title Search LinSews is right above the box.

LinSews Search

The search function is an easy way to find prior posts on a particular subject.  Do you want to know about Resize or Scale? Put in the key word and watch the lessons show up on the page.  Perhaps you wanted a refresher on Encore or color change.  Maybe you want to know what lessons are available on Stitch Editor or Organizer.  Just enter in the key word and wait for the search engine to provide the results. It is a pretty sweet tool.  I use it often and hope you will too.
